This morning, September 26, 2022, I woke up and the first thing I did was look up the Tropical Weather Outlook for Ian, the latest hurricane heading my way here in Florida. Still not absolutely certain Ian will not be coming to visit me, but hoping the predictions are correct and I don’t need to button up my house, secure KANDARIK, or evacuate my house on the water. BUT, we all need to take hurricane preparation seriously, stay aware and proactive in watching these systems, and to PREPARE! Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best!!
For tracking tropical systems, the app that I am currently using the most and one that I can highly recommend is Max Tracker. Here is the link to download the app on Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/max-tracker-hurricane-wplg/id549890546.
Here is the download link on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.justhurricanes.mia.app&hl=en_US&gl=US.
It is an app offered through a local South Florida news station WPLG, but I can highly recommend using it to track any tropical system. Since I am waiting for Hurricane Ian to skirt by South Florida, I have been looking every couple of hours at the ‘Hurricane Ian’ section of the tracker app. This gives all the most important up-to-date information and forecasts for current tropical systems. There are three important
factors in this section when watching the path of a hurricane: the Forecast Cone, the Satellite picture, and the various forecasted Models. Each of these has a button tab at the top and I check this all the time as it is updated all day and night.
Max Tracker also has a section on Tropics Watch for following potential tropical lows that could march across the Atlantic and perhaps become hurricanes.
I love the Local Radar section for knowing when the rain will be in my area and what it’s intensity will be. It is a moving display of rain with different colors for the amount of rainfall. Very helpful when wanting to know what rainfall will be coming, or going away!
Then there is the section on Watches and Warnings for a quick overview of what section of the country is under an official “watch” or “warning”. The Storm Tracker section gives a larger overview of where storms are currently located, and where they are expected to travel. The last two sections are Plan & Prepare and Live Updates.
I use this app probably more than any other, especially in the hurricane season and when I am contemplating a day outside. Simple, easy to use, and so full of great information constantly being
updated.
If anyone would like to have my Hurricane Preparation handout that I give out at my live seminars, just let me know and I will email it to you. Stayed tuned for another blog post soon about How to Prepare your boat for a Hurricane.
Depending on Ian’s path, I still hope to see many of you at the Seven Seas Cruising Association’s Fall Gam this coming weekend in Annapolis at the Maryland Yacht Club. See my latest post about it here: https://www.pamwall.com/seven-seas-cruising-association-fall-gam-annapolis-2022. I will be bringing some of my handouts to give to attendees that I hope will be helpful.
