If you have not read John Rousmaniere’s hair-raising book, “Fastnet, Force 10,” you should! This book was written in direct response to the tragic 1979 Fastnet Race from Cowes, England, around Fastnet Rock off the coast of Ireland, and back to Cowes. While this sailboat race had been run many times, the boats in the 1979 Race encountered Force 10 conditions that caused havoc and losses with the racing fleet.

I was honored to be a speaker at the U.S. Naval Academy’s “Safety at Sea” seminar series this past spring where Gary Jobson was the opening speaker.
Gary began the two day event with a talk about safety and how Ted Turner and his crew not only survived the 1979 Fastnet Race, unscathed, but won the race. Gary premiered his new video on the race aboard TENACIOUS, and the presentation was powerful.
Now you can watch it in the quiet comfort of your home, but you will be hanging on to your arm chair for sure. This is an incredible chronicle of sailing with Ted Turner and his crew in a race no one will ever forget.

Let me know what you think next time you are racing! And, if you see Gary Jobson, shake his hand for me!
