What a great treat for me when Andy and Mia Schell, of 59º North Sailing, asked me to look after Emma Garschagen, the new first mate on their new Swan 59 ICE BEAR. Of course I had heard all about Emma while following the 59-North Sailing podcasts and posts. But little did I know what a delight it would be to have Emma sail into my life!
Emma was coming to Fort Lauderdale to take maritime medical courses to bring her up to date on being a great First Mate aboard ICE BEAR. We met, and became great friends. I picked up Emma at her little crew house where students stay while taking courses. When she first got settled in my car and before we even got to know one another, my cell phone rang. One of my consulting customers called me for some information and while I had my customer on speaker phone in my car, the conversation led to references of Andy and Mia Schell, 59-North Sailing, and their first mate Emma! Well, it was so great for me to introduce Emma, sitting right next to me!!! We three could not believe the coincidence. But, on the other hand, it did not surprise us either, as our sailing community is so worldwide, and so full of wonderful people, and we are all so connected to our sailing passion.
After two weeks of getting to really know, and highly respect Emma Garschagen, I knew I had a friend for life!
During our time together, Emma and I recorded a Podcast episode (“Emma & Pam Talk Sailing”) for 59-North Sailing’s On the Wind podcast. I wanted to share this with you and sincerely hope you enjoy listening to this Podcast as much as I enjoyed being interviewed by Emma! Click below to listen to our fun conversations together, and thank you, dear Emma, for sailing into my life!

One quick story I have to share with you and families who sail together. In this interview with Emma I tell her what we changed on KANDARIK once we returned from our years sailing around the world. The most important change…… was making a bunk for our little 4 year old Jamie, who was not little anymore when he was 11 years old, we had to make a bunk he could fit into!!! We had to take out the cockpit locker completely, and move the chart table forward, and make a long quarter berth for Jamie, our son, who had grown so tall over the years!!! That was a major project of cutting up the cockpit, moving the entire chart table area, and giving Jamie a comfortable sea bunk on KANDARIK.
May our paths cross soon again!
Pam
