I have loved being an instructor at the Cruisers University for the past twelve years. This October there are so many fantastic classes for people who are in Annapolis for the huge and famous Annapolis Boat Show. Today more and more people come to Annapolis for the boat show, and now specifically for the ever increasingly popular Cruisers University.
This Fall Semester of Cruisers University has given me the delight of having a new class that will give every cruiser an incite into what remains, in a time warp, of what a cruising boat has had, and still needs, to be efficient, easy to handle, and safe. Juxtapose my time honored knowledge to Annie Dike’s much younger advice on what is necessary, and what is often considered more modern, features of a cruising sailboat.
Annie Dike is a relatively new sailor and cruiser, and an author of two great books on her passage from newbie to a woman with real understanding of boat handling, maintenance, and equipment. Along with Annie’s great desire to learn as much as possible about the cruising lifestyle she has leaped into the new age of electronics and very new systems of keeping her older boat in great condition. Annie also taught herself about the newer and very functional equipment and maintenance that is so necessary for the carefree cruising lifestyle. You can see Annie on her Facebook page: HaveWindWillTravel. Annie Dike’s two books are: Salt of A Sailor and Keys to the Kingdom. These are two really great books not only for your enjoyment, but for the lessons learned.
Annie the young cruiser, and me, shall we say older, but not forgotten I hope!!!, cruiser will combine our knowledge together and will be suggesting many ideas for making your boat safe and sound in today’s world of cruising.
Our two session class, OLD SALTS AND NEW SYSTEMS, is a course everyone will benefit from immensely.
Old Salts, New Systems: How to Rig an Older Boat for Cruising Comfort
Pam Wall combines her tried & true wisdom on rigging boats for cruising along with Annie Dike’s, an offshore sailor, use of newer technology and gear to best outfit an older boat to cross oceans and cruise comfortably in the islands. In this fun and interactive class, you will gain insight into the pros and cons of all types of systems for boats from rigging, ground tackle, navigation, communication, power management, and propulsion. While Pam will teach the beauty & necessity of dependable, simple systems, Annie will share the perks and quirks of newer more complicated systems with a fun interactive Q & A session at the end.
- This course is rated as a beginner / introductory (101) course
