Review
This is an indispensable book if you are planning to negotiate the boatyards, chandleries or supermarkets of Spain, Mexico, Chile or any other Spanish-speaking country. A thorough 368 pages, it is sensibly laid out in landscape format and ring-bound for easy reference, and split helpfully into sections such as weather, harbour and boatyard, travel, banking, provisioning, boat parts, etc. There's even a short section with handy phrases such as Sit down , Give me a kiss , and I love you should your foreign forays be particularly successful. --Yachting World March 2009
If you liked the first edition of Kathy Parsons Spanish for Cruisers book, you ll love her newly expanded and improved second edition. Subtitled The Boater's Complete Language Guide for Spanish-speaking Destinations, this handy little book now contains 368 pages and is better organized for quick reference. Parsons said she incorporated a lot of boaters feedback received from her first edition. The book is divided into four sections: basic, cruising, ashore and technical. I like that about 120 pages are devoted to the technical stuff of cruising that s difficult to find elsewhere. For example, I learned that a through-hull is a pasacasco, and to plug something in is to enchufar. Within the book sections, you ll find useful headings such as Sentence Starters, Talk on the Radio, Official Paperwork, Give Your Location, Docking, Provisioning, Parts and Repairs. Black and white illustrations range from technical diagrams of hull and rigging to humorous cartoons of boaters with toothaches or dangling from pilings, plus line drawings of everything from chicken parts to injector fuel lines. On most pages, the left column presents the particular word or phrase in English, the Spanish translation is in the middle, and the right column is a pronunciation guide for that word or phrase. If you follow the author s pronunciations, you ll sound almost like a native Spanish speaker. Spanish for Cruisers received great reviews from the Seven Seas Cruising Association. It is published by Aventuras in Texas, which also handles Parsons other book, French for Cruisers. The second edition of this book still has the plastic spiral binding with a wrap-around cover that serves as a quick reference page index and bookmark. --The Log April 2009

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2019The actual book is much larger than I had anticipated, (photo is on top of my 8x12 laptop). I got this book because I work as a Marine Patrol officer. We do boat safety inspections, water rescues, tow in disabled vessels, provide assistance to anyone on the water or it's shore, and enforce boating/fishing laws. The local population consists of many Spanish speaking individuals and I wanted to be able to effectively communicate with them about boats, boating terms, fishing/boating laws, boat safety, and asking/answering questions pertinent to the setting on the water. This book is packed with excellent information and translations of terms and phrases for, not just boating and waterways, but also for land. It has words/phrases regarding dining, recreation, medical/health, transportation, etc. A perfect book for those sailing, boating, cruising, rafting, or recreating in areas where Spanish is spoken.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017Kathy Parsons Spanish for Cruisers is the perfect gringo reference for hanging about in Latin American countries! You know how it goes - ya got a smattering of Spanish that'll get you from point A to point B, get the right bus, buy fuel, locate the bathroom, get a drink, maybe tell a señorita she's got pretty eyes but when it comes to "what capacity compressor would you recommend" or "I need a knife to pry loose a thru hull" or "can you repair the clew on my staysail?" What do ya do?
Well, before Spanish for Cruisers it was a vaudeville act of Spanglish and pantomime. Am I right? You know what I'm talking about! Everything works out somehow but it takes about three times as long as it should have! I don't remember Mrs. Flanglehorn mentioning chain plates once in Conversational Spanish! We were too busy borrowing pencils from the library! A clear oversight if you ask me (I've never had to borrow a pencil in Latin America)
Spanish for Cruisers is well organized for easy reference. The terminology is broken down by system (refrigeration, fiberglass, electrical, plumbing, etc.) and by situation (marina, navigation, clearance, provisioning, etc.), with clear sentence starters (I want, I need, do you have, is it necessary, etc.).
Google Translate has its place but Spanish for Cruisers will quickly become your most favored companion when cruising Latin America!
KUDOS Kathy Parsons!

The best I have seen in 20 years.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2010This book is certainly well written and well thought out. It contains a wealth of translations. However, it is so complete (and technical), and thus, large (366 pages), that I am discouraged somewhat from studying it. I even debate whether or not to take on my next charter (to Spain), because of its size. But, everthing considered, I will probably take it and see how it works out. If it helps me significantly in a difficult situation, I will forever be a fan.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2017A perfect book for reviewing Spanish for any sailor. I have used Kathy's French for Cruisers for years to sail French Polynesia and New Caledonia and have found both books extremely helpful. I highly recommend both
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2016Excellent! Recommend it during our presentations, "Cruising Cuba". Used it the entire time we were there. Helped with our fluency. Well organized, Great content! Thanks!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2017You must get this if sailing through a Spanish speaking country! We didn't use it very often but we would have been lost without it. It was super easy to look up common phrases to speak over the radio and boat part/repair terms.

Excellent. Indispensable for those sailing in Spain who are not fluent in the language. Covers every aspect, explains clearly giving hints and explanations and with a sense of humour. If you are a total non Spanish speaker you can simply show the text and if you are willing to give it a go, the aid to pronunciation should help you achieve the desired communication.
